Nation Mourns Respected Leader and Parliamentary Figure

Tanzania has been plunged into mourning following the death of Jenista Joakim Mhagama, the Member of Parliament for Peramiho and former government minister, who passed away on Thursday in Dodoma at the age of 58.
Parliament’s Speaker, Mussa Azan Zungu, announced her passing to a sombre National Assembly, describing it as a “profound loss to the nation” and extending condolences to her family, colleagues, and the people of Peramiho whom she served with distinction.
Born on June 23, 1967, Mhagama’s career spanned over two decades in public service. Before entering politics, she worked as a school teacher. Over the years, she held several senior government roles, including Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Labour, Youth and the Disabled) and later as Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Public Service Management and Good Governance. Her most recent cabinet position was Minister for Health.
Known for her commitment to public service, Mhagama was widely respected across political lines for her contributions in shaping policy and national discourse. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Parliament in collaboration with her family, with details expected to be announced soon.
“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” said Speaker Zungu as he closed his announcement in a visibly emotional chamber.
